Mount Batur is a Caldera volcano, which means its eruptions have caused the peak to fall in on itself, creating a huge crater. In the case of Mount Batur, a lake has formed in the middle, allowing beautiful scenery and views throughout the area.

There are many view points along the rim of the caldera, some are spectacular vantage points for sunrises and sunsets. Within the crater, close by the lake is our camping area.

Your trip will be begin with a mid-afternoon pick up from our friendly English-speaking driver in our air conditioned van. You’ll be transported to Songan village where you’ll meet your English-speaking guide. Everyone will gather for a briefing as your guide answers questions about the trek.

When ready, you’ll board the traditional boat and canoe across the river about 25 minutes to your camp site. Here you’ll be able to fish and swim in the lake or just sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea as your guides set your campfire and prepare dinner. The guides will also set up and break down all tents and camping equipment. Your job is to simply relax and enjoy.

That evening, you’ll enjoy a traditional Balinese dance from one of the local villages beneath a blanket of a million stars. The rest of the night is for you to soak in the night sky.

We’ll all get up bright and early the next morning to climb the Caldera and watch the sunrise over the horizon with a hot cup of Balinese coffee or tea. We’ll continue the hike along the trails of the crater rim and through the woods until we come back to the boat and across the river.

Next, we’ll enjoy some time in the local hot springs before we hop back on the van and head to the coffee plantation. Here, you can taste Balinese coffee and the famous Kopi Luwak, the rarest and most expensive coffee in the world.

Is Mount Batur and Active volcano?

Yes. The volcano last erupted in 1999-2000. Lava continues to flow from the volcano, which makes it an exciting trek. Should you be concerned of an eruption? It is not likely. International scientists monitor the volcano’s activity and know long in advance if there is an impending chance of an eruption. In such a case, all villagers will be evacuated and tours will be stopped until the danger is gone.

Will we see lava flows?

Yes., it is possible. Lava can be seen from some of the points on the trail as well as from Kintamani.

Is it necessary to hire a local guide for this trek?

We see this question a lot. We know that some guests want to save money and others are adventurous and don’t like the help of a guide. Even though legally, it is permissible for travelers to trek the area on their own, it is not advisable.

Even though we do not condone it, the local trekking association has been known to harass travelers without a guide. Furthermore, because our guides are so experienced they will help you avoid crowded areas, will give you history and culture lessons, will show you the best vantage points for your camera and can get you access to views and scenery such as lava flows that you may otherwise miss if you trekked the area on your own.

With all those advantages, why would you want to trek without a guide? If you don’t hire us, we urge you to select another experienced, licensed and qualified guide.

Can you guarantee that I see the sunrise?

That’s a hard question to answer because due to weather conditions, no guide can guarantee the sunrise. Fortunately, guests are always pleased with this package, even if the clouds prevent the visible sunrise.

What happens if I get into an accident and need to be evacuated?

As members of the local Mount Batur Trekking Association, we support rescue teams that are available to help hikers should they get into an accident and need to be evacuated. Our guides are also trained in basic first aid and evacuation procedures.

Should a guest have an accident that requires evacuation, the rescue team will be notified immediately and will take the injured person to a local hospital where next of kin will be informed of the situation.

Will there be a lot of other other hikers and campers?

We do not know, but it is possible. Mount Batur and the Caldera are becoming more and more popular and you may run into other hikers. This is usually not a problem, however, because hikers tend to more respectful of noise and crowds than most people and our guides know the trails enough to avoid crowds when they get too heavy.

What if I’m afraid of heights?

This is an easy trek and you will not be hiking to the summit. We will be heading up trails to get a better view of the sunrise, however, so if you are concerned that this hike may make you uneasy, we suggest you to contact us here for more information.
